BIO  &  ARTIST STATEMENT

Jerzy Muszyński, born in 1985, is a visual artist based in Poznań, Poland. He graduated from Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts Poznań, receiving an MFA (2011) and a PhD (2019). He is currently working there as an assistant professor and as a co-curator at Galeria Szewska 16 (since 2020). He exhibited, among others, in The Baltic Gallery of Contemporary Art in Słupsk (PL), The Wozownia Art Gallery in Toruń (PL), Tadeusz Kulisiewicz Center for Drawing and Graphics in Kalisz (PL), MOS in Gorzów Wielkopolski (PL), The Arsenal Municipal Gallery and AT Gallery in Poznan (PL).

Muszyński's artistic practice revolves around the intersection of painting and sculpture, as the coexistence of physical objects in the embodied space and their visual representations in the perceptual field. Motivated by his personal astonishment at the mere presence of reality, he abstains from imposing his presence as the author by using industrial materials and techniques to amplify matter's visual qualities. Since 2019 he has been developing the series titled . . . (NONSPECIFIED), in which starting from its very title, Muszyński challenges the cultural compulsion for textual explanations of the visuals. Instead, he aims to evoke the experience prior to the division of form and content.
