BIO & ARTIST STATEMENT
Jerzy Muszyński (he / him), born in 1985 in Supraśl, Eastern Poland, is a visual artist based in Poznań, Poland. He graduated (MFA) from Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts Poznań, receiving an MFA (2011) and a PhD (2019). He is currently working there as an assistant professor and as a co-curator at Galeria Szewska 16 (since 2020). He exhibited, among others, in Riga Porcelain Museum (LV), The Museum of Sibir in Białystok (PL), The Baltic Gallery of Contemporary Art in Słupsk (PL), Galeria Sztuki BWA in Olsztyn (PL), The Wozownia Art Gallery in Toruń (PL), Jan Tarasin Art Gallery in Kalisz (PL), The Arsenal Municipal Gallery and AT Gallery in Poznań (PL).
Muszyński's artistic practice revolves around the intersection of painting and sculpture, as the coexistence of physical objects in the embodied space and their visual representations in the perceptual field. Since 2019 he has been developing the series titled . . . (NONSPECIFIED), in which, starting from its very title, Muszyński questions the cultural habits of supplementing images with text. Instead, he aims to evoke the experience prior to the division of form and content. Driven by his personal astonishment at the mere presence of reality, he draws from the tradition of minimalism and its philosophical reflection on the existential entanglement of perception. By using industrial materials and techniques he withdraws his gestural presence to emphasize the presence of matter’s sensual qualities as a carrier of non-verbal content and to evoke specific associations and emotions.
